This will tell you how many hours your drive has actually been in use. However, one of the most important lines you’ll want to look for in the results, is Power-On Hours. You can get a full listing of your drive health with the command: If the smartctl command is missing, you can install smartmontools with the command: The above command reported (for the Intel drive):Ģ33 Media_Wearout_Indicator 0x0032 092 092 000 Old_age Always - 0įor the Kingston, the same command returned nothing. Sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Media_Wearout_Indicator I confirmed this by using the smartmontools command: For example, the Kingston drive doesn’t have Media_Wearout_Indicator enabled (whereas the Intel drive does). If I run the SMART test on both, I see different tests appear in the results. The second, a Kingston SSD, was installed by me. The first (an Intel SSD) was installed by System76. For example, I have two different SSDs installed in my System76 Leopard Extreme. Not all manufacturers follow the same standard. One thing you will notice is that each SSD will return different test entries. As the test runs, a progress meter will report the percentage of the test complete (as well as the Start button will change to Stop).Īfter the Self-Test completes, the new results will populate the window. Get a quick glimpse of your drive’s healthĪll from a handy, user-friendly GUI tool. Thanks to a very handy tool called GNOME Disks, you can get a quick glimpse of your drive health and run standard tests on the drive. Does that mean Linux users must remain in the dark as to their drive health? No. However, most of that software is, as you might expect, Windows-only. Many SSDs you purchase are shipped with software that can be used to monitor said health. After all, your data depends on the storing drives being sound and running properly. With no moving parts to wear out, these drives can (effectively) enjoy a longer life than standard platter-based drives.Įven though these drives are not prone to mechanical failure, you will still want to keep tabs on their health. They are faster, and the latest iterations are more reliable than traditional drives. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are slowly becoming the norm, with good reason. I am planning a concert in the fall, and need to print the music for my pianist…but my printer is down, and my work computer (complete with adobe) won’t read it. I downloaded finale notepad onto my home computer (as I can’t afford finale) but I can’t get it to save as anything but a. I have a tocata I composed while in a composition class at college. Hi Scott, I couldn’t find a pedal tool, but used the line tool instead to create the three lines that would make up a pedal mark (doesn’t look so smooth if you need continuous pedaling). Hi Peter, my daughter loves notepad but is frustrated on creating pedal marks…how’d you do it? There’s no direct to PDF export, although you could just download a free PDF printer.Creating pedal marks takes a while and is difficult to copy (would be handy to have a pedal tool).I don’t think it’s possible to change the time signature mid-piece or after you’ve created the document. There are no watermarks when you print your composition. You can create sheet music for many instruments using up to 8 staves. There’s a handy text tool as well as a free-form line shapes tool to create things like double bars and pedal marks. All you need to do is click on the appropriate tool and then click on the appropriate place in the score: It’s easy to add crescendos, ties, rests, sharps, key changes, slurs, repeats, and even glissandos. Some highlights from my brief testing include: (If you’re creating music for sale then you should probably be looking at paid alternatives.) I’ve been experimenting a bit with Final NotePad (runs on Windows or Mac) and think it’s quite good. Unfortunately, there aren’t many good free programs, especially ones with a friendly graphical user interface. It’s much easier to share and duplicate a digital file than messy scribbles. But what if you’re serious or good enough to want to share your music? (Ahem, I’m not, but I still looked into it anyway :D) There are some good software programs that enable you to create sheet music digitally. The few times that I’ve tried to compose or transcribe music for the piano, I’ve always written on blank staff paper. Races last about one to two minutes tops – long enough to get amped, short enough to start up a new one quickly. Just grab them and send them off in the right direction. The cars can also end up going backwards if they go too fast on the turns, spinning around and heading in reverse. We ended up thinking we would want to glue the bumpers to the tracks, if we had a big place to store the tracks in that set-up. They flew right off when our cars hit them. Get ready: because they fly fast - and here's where those guard rails cropped up again. They'll do this each time you launch a game - but not each time you race.īlue lights on the cars mean they're on the track, ready to go, and those will turn green as they start to tear around the track. The cars go around the track slowly for the first lap - the cars need to scan the track and get a feel for where they're going. Our track, built with extra pieces from the original Anki Overdrive kit. However, the sound effects are like being on a race track: the race starts and finishes come through with that echo-like microphone sound. The music that plays is cool, and quickly gets you into that edgy, racing mood, but it quickly becomes repetitive and annoying. Full disclosure: We have the original Anki Overdrive and using that we were able to build a seriously, sick track. You have to think about if you cars have enough track to build up speeds for your jumps. You get to invent the most insane jumps and turns you can to test your cars. Still, making the track was great fun, and easily as much fun as racing. That's what happened to us on almost every race. When they're loose, cars can fly off on the floor, taking the rails with them. You'll find, as we did, that these guard rails are necessary to keep cars from sliding off the track. The Anki Overdrive Fast & Furious is meant to allow cars to go faster, and guard rails are key. Setting up tracks, we took off the guardrails for the Anki Overdrive Fast & Furious edition. The 12 guardrails or bumpers that come with the track don't secure very well to the sides of the tracks - there are slots where you slide them in - and after spending 10 minutes, we left them tucked on the sides, unconvinced they will stay. Our biggest problem came up even before we started racing. (They'll turn red when your car's battery is running low.) The cars need some time to charge - set aside a bit for that too - and its lights will turn a solid green when they're ready to race. The tracks could work on a big enough table (it would have to be sizeable.) The floor is best. That's also worth noting because you're going to need some floor room to build and play. You can actually sit in the center of the track once it's set up - just so you get a sense of space. You get nine track pieces - three straight and six curved - more than enough to make a solid racing space. We cracked open our kit, which Anki sent us to test, setting up the initial track in a matter of minutes. Two cars, Dom's Charger and Hobbs' MXT, come with the Anki Overdrive Fast and Furious edition - Nuke is extra. So make sure you're searching for the right app in your respective app store. While this doesn't take too much time, set aside a few minutes.Īlso, the app for this special edition is different than the app for the Anki Overdrive main kit: there are way more features, weapons and tricks you can earn and unlock with this particular toy. But note that both people need to download the Anki Overdrive Fast & Furious Edition app on their separate phones, and create two separate accounts. But racing against a fellow player is much more fun. Ideally, you're going to want to play this edition with someone else. The box set really just mirrors the original race track, but with some movie branding, and virtual tricks built into the app that lets you ramp up gameplay while you race. That merger is here with a special edition racing track and toy - the $169.99 Anki Overdrive Fast & Furious Edition. That's why it was just a matter of time before Anki Overdrive teamed up with The Fast and the Furious franchise. Toy racing tracks and high-speed car movies are perfect bedfellows. The Sony MDR-1A DAC includes Sony’s S-Master HX digital amplifier, where volume amplification is done primarily on the DAC hardware instead of the analog amp, and subtle DSP effects are applied to smooth out and “up-res” audio to 192khz. Are they doing any of that? Not yet! And they may never.Īpple could unlock the sampling rate limitations in iOS, allowing for higher-res audio playback and support for a wider variety of sound formats. They could apply cool DSP (Digital Signal Processing) effects to add virtual surround sound for movies, simualted room characteristics for music listening, and other fun optional effects for audio that go beyond simple EQ tweaks. Keeping sound in the digital domain on the phone allows for all sorts of things that Apple just isn’t doing yet. The wasted opportunities here are endless, however. The DAC/amp used seem to be of high quality, just like in the older phones. In a side-by-side comparison, it’s essentially impossible to tell a sound difference. This could be due to the new DAC/amp or it could be due to a sensitivity tweak. The volume is handled differently, with a slightly louder output than the old EarPods. The cord is a little nicer than the old one. The sound and fit are both acquired tastes, which I happen to enjoy. They have a wider soundstage than the average ear bud. They sound best for podcasts, acoustic music, and female vocals, but they’ll work for anything in a pinch. The sound is still strongly mid-treble-leaning, and although they’re not totally without bass…they’re much more prone to sibilance than to thumpiness. The myriad vent ports are still in the same places. They fit my ears very well, but they don’t fit everyone’s ears. The Pods themselves are fully identical in design and basic function to the old ones. Well I’ll tell you: They’re 99 percent identical to EarPods. These are headphones and you haven’t talked about how they make the audio go. I’d wager a guess that the new lightning-to-headphone jack dongle is using this same thicker Lightning plug to hide the audio hardware. Most Bluetooth/Lightning headphones to this point have placed the DAC and Amp either inside the ear cups, or inside the control button unit on the cable.īoth of those options add extra weight to your head, so adding the weight to the plug in your pocket is quite clever. I’m not going to rip open the plug to find out, but putting the components in there is a really smart call. It’s a thicker and longer hunk of plastic than on the standard Lightning connector, and a little heavier too. On these new EarPods with Lightning Connector(tm), I’m reasonably certain that the DAC and amp are housed inside the plastic attached to the Lightning plug. Now, those pieces have to live either in your headphones, or inside a dongle. It can deliver digital sound data through Bluetooth or the Lightning port, but you still need a DAC and amp to actually play that audio on headphones. The iPhone 7 cannot deliver analog audio at all. Many people wrote articles about the removal of the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, but the DAC and amp were removed too. Apple’s amps were never studio grade or anything, but they were quite capable of powering most portable headphones and in-ear monitors. Next the audio passed into an analog signal amplifier, which would push the audio through the headphone jack and also power your plugged-in headphones. Apple always used high quality DAC components, but limited the playback rate to 48khz, preventing high-res audio compatibility. Your digital file would first hit a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) chip inside the phone, where it was converted from ones and zeroes to analog audio waves. In the bygone days of a few weeks ago, when the iPhone had a headphone jack, audio was delivered through a multi-step chain. My other lightning headphones, the Sony MDR-1A DAC, work just fine on older versions of iOS, but the Lightning EarPods require iOS 10. I plugged the EarPods into the lightning port of my iPhone 6 Plus…and was promptly asked to update to iOS 10. The box has a few too many little flaps inside for my liking, but it’s got that classic Apple design. Instead, they come in a recyclable paperboard box. The EarPods with Lightning Connector don’t come in the solid plastic case the old model used. My old EarPods have seen some serious action, and so I thought, “Why not get the new ones? They’re cheap and my Apple store has some in-stock.” I bet you wish your Saturdays were as exciting as mine. Look! EarPods! But with a Lightning Connector! Communication can be a great way to plan this kind of an attack, but you can also keep things simple and follow your teammates around the arena. The more players working together on this, the more you score. Team takedowns are a way to earn bonus points by working together to wreck an enemy player. Once we had the early versions of Blitz up and running, we quickly began to dig a little deeper to see what we could include to help separate the good teams from the best teams. If you earn your Hero Vehicle in round one, will you deploy it asap to secure the win or save it to start round two with a decisive advantage? Do you use your main in the first round or save it for a comeback in round four? Another factor to consider is that your ability charge for your Breaker and Hero Vehicle also carry over between rounds. We feel this makes you think more about your team composition. This means you’ll be using anywhere from two to five different AllStars in a game of Blitz, depending on how many rounds are played. Once you’ve used an AllStar, you can’t pick them again for the rest of the match. With character lockouts, you need to pick a new AllStar at the start of every round. The first team to win two rounds will win the match, so there’s no need to worry if you feel like you’ve fallen too far behind, one good round puts you right back up there.Īlong with its round-based system, what really sets Blitz apart is character lockouts and ability energy carry over. Scoring points should feel very familiar with hits, barges, wrecks and KOs being a reliable way to climb the scoreboard. Each match is split into rounds where teams battle it out to be the first team to score 100 points, or have the highest points when the timer runs out. Splitting those 12 into four teams of three AllStars helped give more weight to your choice of AllStar throughout a match. To accomplish this, we made the decision to have a maximum of 12 players in a game of Blitz. Overall, we wanted to tone down some of the noise and allow for calculated, precision gameplay whilst enabling you to stay tuned in to how a game was progressing between multiple teams. To achieve this, we knew we had to inject various forms of teamplay into Blitz, whether it be understanding which team member should choose a specific AllStar, driving as a pack to hunt the same opponents or avenging the wreck of a teammate by wrecking an enemy player. When starting out with this kind of mode, we knew that we wanted to create something which uses the core game mechanics and what people enjoy about Mayhem, but create a highly competitive, intense and fast-paced game mode that rewards team focused play. A few years ago, if you wanted to learn how to play a specific instrument, you had to take a lot of music lessons and also buy that specific musical instrument, eventually. But it’s admittedly disappointing that it's taken so long for the impulse triggers to be utilized more, as they're a really nice feature that has largely been forgotten about in Microsoft's trusty pad. It makes sense that if developers are going out of their way to add an extra layer of immersion to PS5 games, Xbox games will ultimately benefit too. I hope that the tips of my fingers will be pleasantly surprised when playing more Xbox Series X games in the future, then. We saw the same business move when Sony created the Move controllers in response to the Wii, and Microsoft went all in on the casual gaming craze with Kinect. When a piece of technology becomes standardized, though, like rumble, the share button or motion controls (to a degree), that’s when more developers take notice.ĭepending on the success of Sony's pad, I wouldn't be surprised to see Microsoft release a controller of its own that can provide the same sensations as the DualSense controller. But this takes time, money and ultimately isn’t something that will equate to more sales so is often ignored. In a perfect world, developers would try to make the most of each console’s unique feature set. I’ve already noticed that Dirt 5, Gears Tactics and Tetris Effect: Connected make good use of the triggers, and it’s likely that other titles will now at least add some sort of functionality if work has already been done on the PS5 title. Such as trigger less than 50 pulled and a button press does something different than trigger fully pulled and a button press. For our operator we can also use different value ranges on the trigger to do different things. The good news is that, due to Sony’s insistence of making the DualSense the star attraction of the PS5, more third-party titles are seemingly implementing the Xbox controller’s rumbling triggers. We use the triggers as our throttle (left trigger is fwd, right trigger is rev). "I hope that the tips of my fingers will be pleasantly surprised when playing more Xbox Series X games in the future" The adaptive triggers can change resistance to create more sensations than rumble can ever provide, such as the tension when you pull back on a bow string or jam when your gun locks.īut nevertheless, the impulse triggers are still a great addition that have been criminally underused on Microsoft’s console, and even if they don't reach the heights of Sony's new buttons, they help add an extra level of depth over the standard rumble we’ve experienced for decades. It's important to clarify that the impulse triggers aren't as impactful as the adaptive triggers in the DualSense controller. And yet time and time again, so many games failed to use them. The same can be said in Sunset Overdrive – still the best Xbox One exclusive as far as I'm concerned – which gave shotgun blasts an extra oomph thanks to the triggers. You get a better indication of your car’s brakes locking up, or when you should slam down on the throttle to stop your car from wheel spinning. The effect they have in driving games is immediately noticeable, and it makes a tangible difference to the overall experience. This was always a missed opportunity for me, as the controller's impulse triggers are genuinely great. Even Microsoft's first-party studios have been guilty of ignoring the feature, which has been particularly frustrating. This file has been truncated.I'd wager a guess that maybe a dozen or so games actually bothered to implement any sort of trigger rumble, and the majority of games that did were Forza Motorsport 5, 6, 7 and the Forza Horizon series. * must be accompanied by the FIRST BSD license file in the root directory of */ * Open Source Software - may be modified and shared by FRC teams. It is difficult comparing Ocean Waves to the theatrical Ghibli releases and that is why I did not include this film in my ranking of all their films. But I have to congratulate them for making an above average TV film as the animation is very strong for television standards and at times even quite beautiful. Now obviously this is the weakest animated Studio Ghibli film but it is not fair to compare it to the rest of their pantheon as it is the only TV movie and thus it lacked in terms of budget. The film is short, but still somewhat prolonged for its very thin plot. I wish the rest of the film was as emotional or as memorable as that last third. The film is also very well scored and I really liked some of the symphonic pieces here and there, especially in the third moving act. The anime is very well acted, on the other hand. His direction here is pretty pedestrian and he does nothing inspired or interesting with this average material. And it shows unfortunately as Tomomi Mochizuki just could never compete with those two genius directors. Ocean Waves was made by younger creators at Studio Ghibli and is the first film from the studio with no involvement from either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata. She is especially unsympathetic toward everyone in the film and it is thus difficult to get behind her and the boys’ infatuation with her. Taku and Yutaka are somewhat unlikable at times and mostly just boring, but Rikako herself is very annoying and bitchy. All of these characters are somewhat unlikable and thus I could not care for them. Speaking of the characters, they are a nuisance and a big problem the film just never overcame. The movie did succeed cinematically in its third act, but the rest of it was pretty uninspired and I could see that it was made for television as it was both technically uninspired and pretty average in terms of story and characterization. The highlight for me was the ending as it explored and showcased nostalgia superbly and I just loved both that dock scene which is so well shot and the final scene which is very powerful. The film does get teenagers meaning that it portrays them somewhat realistically and especially their messy relationships and interactions within the school. That entire conflict between the three felt overly familiar, typical and pretty boring. I do not get triangles, I find them annoying and this movie is no exception. The film has a very standard teen story which is basically a triangle between two male friends and a girl whom they both get infatuated with. It is the only TV movie from Studio Ghibli and admittedly one of their weakest efforts. |
